In 1995 Robert McCool developed the first iteration of the Apache HTTP Server, and since 1999 the project has been developed under the direction of the Apache Software Foundation. The Apache HTTP Server software saw a rapid growth of usage during the early years of the internet and by so embedding itself as the defacto web server of the internet. The software is commonly known as just "Apache", and due to its popularity benefits from great documentation and integrated support with other software and services. Apache is often chosen by web developers and administrators due to the nature of its flexibility, power, widespread support and ease of integration.
